GEORGE FLOYD

His name was George Floyd. On May 25th, he was murdered by four Minneapolis police officers. George Floyd was a Black man who was murdered in broad daylight after a grocery clerk called the police thinking he was writing a bad check. For seven minutes, George laid on the street while officers Derek Chauvin and Tou Thao held their knee on his neck as he was struggling to breathe. He lost consciousness and yet they continued to strangle him. Numerous bystanders pleaded with the police officer to let him go, while Floyd said the words “I can’t breathe,” several times, but the officer refused to remove his knee from Floyd’s neck.

BREONNA TAYLOR

On March 13th, in the middle of the night, Breonna Taylor was murdered by Louisville police as they illegally executed a drug raid at the wrong address for a person they had already arrested earlier that day. An aspiring nurse, she had dedicated her whole life to serving others. Until her death, Breonna had been working as an EMT in Louisville when the coronavirus pandemic hit, working at two hospitals to save lives in her community. She survived repeated exposure to COVID-19 only to have her life cut short by senseless police violence. She and her family deserve justice —

Ahmaud Arbery

Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man, was jogging near his neighborhood in Brunswick, GA on February 23 when he was chased down, shot, and killed in cold blood. His executioners were father & son, Gregory and Travis McMichael, two white men, who told police they believed Ahmaud fit the profile of a suspect. The truth is: Ahmaud’s murder was an act of hatred and white supremacy.

Emerald Black

On June 7th, 2019, Emerald Black, a pregnant, black woman, and her fiance were pulled over by police officers after coming from a doctor's appointment. The reason for being pulled over was for bad registration tags. The officers spoke to Ms. Black's fiance while she stayed in the car. The officers began to order her out of the car. Ms. Black was clearly pregnant and she had let them know that she had just gotten back from a doctor's appointment where she was also informed that she was at high risk for a miscarriage. Despite this, the officers yanked Ms. Black, still in her hospital clothes, and threw her to the ground. They taunted her, piled on top of her, and stomped on her stomach causing her to miscarry. The stomp had also left a shoe mark. They then arrested her.

Rubber Bullets

RUBBER.jpg

Rubber bullets are said to be “less lethal” than regular bullets and are being used by the police to disperse peaceful protests across the country. These bullets are the size of one’s hand and made of the same material as regular bullets, only coated in a thin layer of rubber. Those hit by these bullets has suffered severe injuries. Many have lost their eyes, developed brain bleeding, the list goes on. These bullets have even been used on children. Rubber bullets are also only supposed to be shot at the ground for crowd control, but cops have been shooting them directly at people, many of them aiming at the faces of thousands of individuals. These bullets are obviously an inhumane and very dangerous way of handling protests that aren’t even violent. The police are trying to take away our first amendment right of peaceful protest with these weapons. To protect our rights and ourselves, rubber bullets must be prohibited. Nobody should lose an eye or develop brain damage for speaking out.

Hands Up Act

handsup.jpg

We need legislation (now!) that prohibits police officers from shooting unarmed citizens. If there isn’t a weapon found after someone has been shot (therefore, unarmed) by a police officer, then it is proposed that the officer should receive a mandatory    15-year prison sentence.

White House

whitehouse.jpg

It is time to reform the Police and introduce mandatory heavy racial sensitivity training, stronger and fair punishments for racist injustices, and checks before hiring and during service to make sure the officer is not racist and is doing their job correctly. Officers should be held accountable for their actions as well as other officers on the scene who are accomplices. This should be done in all states and be frequent and required. This is racial inequality, and it’s time to stop. It’s time for the Government to practice what they preach, and give us justice against racism.
